Kesef or Splitwise: which one fits how you split expenses

Splitwise splits bills and nothing else. Kesef splits them and tracks your own spending too. Compared with sources and a date — including where Splitwise wins.

Both apps solve the same thing at the core: who owes whom, without a spreadsheet. The difference is everything around it. Splitwise does one thing and has done it for over a decade; Kesef puts shared expenses inside the app where you also track your own. Which one suits you depends on whether you want one or the other, and the detail is below — including the features where Splitwise is better.

The short answer

If all you want is to split bills with a group, and you already track your personal spending somewhere else (or don't track it at all), Splitwise is a proven tool and almost all your friends already have it installed — not a small detail when you have to get five people to join.

If what you share is a home — rent, groceries, utilities with your partner or whoever you live with — and you want those expenses to reach your monthly summary instead of living in a separate app, Kesef is built for that. And if you log several expenses a day, Kesef's free plan won't stop you.

The real difference: one app or two

Splitwise is a shared-expense app. It doesn't track your personal spending, and doesn't try to. That means the dinner you paid for with friends is recorded in Splitwise and shows up nowhere when you want to know how much you spent going out this month: for that you need a second app, or a spreadsheet, or to not know.

In Kesef the group lives inside the app where you track everything else. What you paid on the trip or on the shared groceries reaches your monthly summary through your actual share — not the full amount you fronted, and not zero. Settling a debt doesn't count as an expense or as income, so a month where the group squared up doesn't look like a month of income that never existed.

The free plan's daily cap

This is the most concrete day-to-day difference. Splitwise lists "unlimited expenses" among the Splitwise Pro features, which means the free plan caps how many expenses you can add per day. They don't publish the exact number.

It matters exactly when the app gets used most: the second day of a trip, when you want to log breakfast, the taxis, the museum ticket and dinner. Kesef has no expense cap on the free plan, per day or per month.

Where Splitwise is better

Three things, worth saying plainly because they can be decisive:

  • Receipt scanning and itemization. You photograph the receipt and Splitwise Pro reads it and separates the items. Kesef doesn't do this.
  • Importing card transactions to split them, available in the United States. Kesef doesn't connect to banks or cards.
  • The network. Splitwise has been around for over a decade and a great many people already have it installed, so putting a group together is usually easier.

If your case is a big dinner that has to be split item by item, or your friends are all on Splitwise already and you're not going to move them, that's the tool.

Choose Kesef if…

  • You share household expenses with a partner or flatmates, every month.
  • You want shared expenses to reach your personal summary instead of living apart.
  • You log several expenses a day and don't want to hit a cap.
  • You handle more than one currency and don't want to pay for conversion.
  • Budgets per category and recurring expenses in the same app are useful to you.

Choose Splitwise if…

  • You only want to split bills and aren't interested in tracking personal spending.
  • Scanning receipts and splitting by item is part of how you use it.
  • You're in the US and want to import card transactions.
  • Your whole group already uses it and there's no point moving them.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Splitwise Pro cost?

Splitwise doesn't publish the price on its website, so we don't state it here: it appears when you open the subscription from the app or on the store listing. Kesef Pro costs USD 3 per month or USD 20 per year, and both apps show ads on their free plan.

Does Splitwise's free plan limit expenses?

Yes. Splitwise lists "unlimited expenses" as one of the Splitwise Pro features, which implies a daily cap on the free plan; they don't publish the exact number. Kesef has no expense cap on its free plan.

Can I track my personal spending in Splitwise?

No, Splitwise is a shared-expense app: it records what you split with other people. Kesef does both in the same app, so your share of a shared expense reaches your monthly summary.

Does Kesef convert currencies for free?

Yes, conversion across more than 60 currencies is on Kesef's free plan. In Splitwise, currency conversion is listed among the Splitwise Pro features.

Does Kesef scan receipts like Splitwise?

No. Receipt scanning and itemization are Splitwise Pro features that Kesef doesn't have. If that's central for you, Splitwise handles that case better.

Can I move my Splitwise groups to Kesef?

There's no automatic group import. The practical route is to create the group in Kesef and start from the current period's expenses, settling whatever's outstanding from the previous one in Splitwise.
