# Couple expenses, clear and with no score-keeping

> Rent 60/40, groceries down the middle or everything shared: log each expense and Kesef works out who owes whom. Free for both, on iPhone and Android.

You pay the rent, she pays the groceries, you pay the electricity again. Neither of you really keeps track, both of you half-track it in your heads, and what's left is the feeling — almost always unfair — that one of you put in more. Kesef exists so that conversation isn't necessary: each of you logs what you pay, it's split the way you agreed, and you both see the same balance right away.

## Three ways to split, chosen per expense

There's no correct rule for a couple; there's one that survives. So each expense is split however suits you, and you choose per expense, not once for the whole group:

- Down the middle: the expense is split evenly. The simplest option when your incomes are similar.
- By percentage: 60/40, 70/30 or whatever you agreed, so the effort weighs about the same even when the numbers don't.
- By shares or exact amounts: when one of you has the big bedroom, or when the split follows no rule at all.

The group has a default split and any expense can override it, just for that expense. Rent can go 60/40 and last night's dinner down the middle, inside the same group and without reconfiguring anything.

## Shared pot: everyone chips in and expenses come out of it

If you'd rather not split at all, the group can work as a pot: each of you puts money in and expenses come out of it. Kesef tells you what's left in the pot and who put in more or less, and to settle up each of you squares with the pot, not with each other.

> Putting money in or taking it out of the pot doesn't show up in your transactions: only your share of each expense reaches your own finances.

## Everything shared: when the money belongs to both

For a couple whose money is already together there are no debts to work out. With Everything shared the group doesn't track who owes whom: it just shows where the money goes, by category and month by month. You pick it in the group's settings, and once the pot has movements the group stays a shared-fund group: to go back to splitting, start a new one.

## The fixed bills log themselves

Rent, service charges, electricity, gas and internet can be set as recurring inside the group: they show up every month with the same split, with nobody having to remember. And an instalment purchase — the washing machine, the sofa — comes into the group in instalments: one per month, each divided the same way, logged once.

## What's yours stays yours

Your partner sees only what's in the group: its expenses, its splits and its settlements. Your transactions, your categories, your budgets and your balance aren't visible to anyone else. Sharing a home isn't sharing an account.

And for every shared expense, your transactions and insights show only your share: not the full amount you fronted, and not zero. Settling a debt doesn't count as an expense or as income either, so the month you square up doesn't look like a month of income that never existed.

## Paid with Mercado Pago? Move it into the group

If you connected Mercado Pago, the groceries you paid by QR already came into Kesef on their own. To share them, edit the transaction and move it into the group: it's split like any other expense, with no need to log it again. The Mercado Pago integration is part of Kesef Pro; groups are free for both of you.

## A reminder, without the awkwardness

If one of you forgets to settle up, the other sends a nudge from the app with what's owed. Once a day at most, so it never gets annoying: Kesef does the reminding, not you.

## One currency per group, even if you pay in several

Each group has its own currency and balances always show in it. Anything logged in another one — the hotel in reais, the flight in dollars — converts on its way in, at that day's rate, and stays fixed. It works for the flat in pesos and for the trip you take together, with 150+ currencies.

## Savings goals for something you both want

Saving for a trip? Each of you can set a savings goal with an amount and a date, log every contribution and see whether you'll make it: what's left, your pace and how much per month it would take. Goals are personal, not the group's, and money you set aside doesn't count as spending. Two active goals free; unlimited with Pro.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do we both have to pay?

No. Groups and shared expenses are on Kesef's free plan, both for whoever creates the group and for whoever joins through the link or with the code. Nobody needs a subscription to see balances or log expenses.

### Do we need to create an account?

For the group, yes, with Apple or Google in one tap and no password: it's what lets what one of you logs reach the other. Your personal expenses work with no account.

### Can we split 60/40 if one of us earns more?

Yes, by percentage. And since you choose per expense, rent can go 60/40 while groceries go down the middle inside the same group. You can also type each person's exact amount.

### Can my partner see my personal expenses?

No. They see only what's in the group: its expenses, its splits and its settlements. Your transactions, categories, budgets and balance aren't visible to anyone else.

### Can we have a shared pot?

Yes. In the group's settings pick Shared pot: each of you chips in, expenses come out of the pot, and Kesef shows what's left and who put in more. If the money is already both of yours, Everything shared just tracks where it goes, with no debts.

### Is there a shared budget for the couple?

Not for now: Kesef's budgets are personal and per category. With the shared pot you see what's left, which for a household is usually the question that matters.

### How is it different from Splitwise?

The group lives in the same app where you track your own spending: your share of each shared expense reaches your month, and settling up doesn't inflate your income. Splitwise works out who owes whom, but what you paid for the home stays in a separate app. The full comparison is in Kesef vs Splitwise.
